In the Neon Shadows, I Wear My Crown:
The Story of Survival, Rebirth, and Radical Visibility
There comes a moment when surviving is no longer enough.
There comes a moment when you have to choose whether you will spend the rest of your life shrinking to fit into someone else’s narrow, controlling box, or whether you will stand up, plant your heels firmly into the ground, and reclaim every single piece of yourself that was stolen.

THE STORY BEHIND "NEON SHADOWS"
SURVIVING THE STORM
There comes a moment when surviving is no longer enough.
There comes a moment when you have to choose whether you will spend the rest of your life shrinking to fit into someone else’s narrow, controlling box, or whether you will stand up, plant your heels firmly into the ground, and reclaim every single piece of yourself that was stolen.
"Neon Shadows" is that moment for me.
Like many people in both life and the entertainment industry, I have navigated environments where love was weaponised, control was normalised, and coercive dynamics slowly eroded my boundaries. When you are entangled in toxic relationships, you are gradually conditioned to believe that your light is too blinding, your voice is too loud, and your ambition is a liability.
Off stage, I found myself walking on glass, questioning my worth, and fighting through the silent heartbreak of having someone systematically try to diminish who I was. On stage, as a live-singing drag queen and queer entertainer, I faced industry naysayers who constantly tried to dictate how I should sound, what I should look like, and how much space I was permitted to occupy.
For a long time, the weight of those expectations felt like venom pooling at my feet. But heartbreak has a way of burning off illusions. When everything was stripped away, the one undeniable truth that remained was my authenticity.
Nobody can take away the voice you built with your own lungs.
Nobody can revoke the crown you earned through your own survival.
CRAFTING SONIC FIRE IN SYDNEY
Bringing this chapter to life required a sonic world that matched the emotional stakes: dark, defiant, cinematic, and soaring.
I took this vision into two of Sydney's most revered recording spaces, Studios 301 and The Artist Studios Sydney. Working closely with recording engineer Tyler Murray, we captured 100% live, raw vocal takes that channeled every ounce of anger, liberation, and defiance I had kept caged up.
To give the track its arena-sized punch and sparkling club-ready finish, legendary engineer Leon Zervos stepped behind the mixing desk. Leon took the heavy electro basslines, retro synth-noir textures, and soaring vocal belts and turned them into absolute sonic armour.
RADICAL VISIBILITY: DRAG AS ARMOUR
As Braeden, and through my alter-ego Kara Zmatiq, I have spent years on stages across Australia, from festival main-stages and luxury weddings to late-night club circuits. What I know for certain is that queer art is inherently an act of courage. Singing 100% live in drag is not about putting on a mask; it is about taking off every filter until only raw truth remains.
"Neon Shadows" is not just my personal story; it is dedicated to every survivor who has ever had to pick up their own shattered pieces after a toxic dynamic. It is a reminder that no matter how hard they try to suffocate your fire, they cannot stop your rebirth.
Crush what tried to break you. Broke the chains. Stood my ground.
In the neon shadows, I wear my crown.

LYRICS

[Verse]
Neon lights in the night city's wild soul
Toxic air suffocates gotta pay the toll
Sex drugs rock and roll a venomous embrace
Survived the storm felt the burn no time to waste
[Verse 2]
Dangerous lover with a midnight glaze
Smoke-filled rooms we danced in the haze
Thrill-seeking hearts on a destructive spree
Shattered pieces now a stronger me
[Chorus]
I survived your fire but I'm reborn
Broke the chains no more withdrawn
Toxic love can't hold me down
In the neon shadows I wear my crown
Stand my gr red ound
Wear my crown
Stand my ground
[Verse 3]
Electric beats thumping deep in my core
Escaped your grip now I crave no more
Midnight's kiss tasted like bitter wine
But I'm standing tall in the skyline
[Verse 4]
Tie-dye dreams in a cybernetic trance
Lost in the chaos but I took a chance
Faced the demons in the dark force
Now I'm free on a new course
[Chorus]
I survived your fire but I'm reborn
Broke the chains no more withdrawn
Toxic love can't hold me down
In the neon shadows I stand my ground
